It's been a horrible and disturbing situation for some time, rumours of mistreatment by carers and business partners, with some allegedly taking advantage of the legend who is currently 95 years of age and revered the world over for his sweeping influences on our current culture. This came to a head recently when the man himself took to Twitter and has begun to take legal action against those that have wronged him. It's a story that will make you furious and resolute at the same time.
Taking to Twitter on the 12th of May, Stan Lee posted this very concerning message to his 3 million followers:
At face value this could be misconstrued as the man in question wanting to be the one who posts to his social media instead of his staff. Celebrities having dedicated social media help is not a new concept, Simon Pegg for one, does not run his own official channel on Twitter, having stepped away from it over a year ago. This is not the case here however, it is much more sinister.
It has come to light that Stan Lee is taking legal action against POW! Entertainment, a company he co-founded, and against his ex-business manager Jerardo Olivarez also. Against POW! he has brought forth a $1 billion lawsuit for a sale of POW! Entertainment to a Chinese company. The legal action claims that the sale was made without his consent and that he was not involved in any decision making, with no terms having been disclosed to him. He also claims that POW! CEO Shane Duffy and co-founder Gill Champion fraudulently attained documents to the exclusive rights to his name and likeness, including control of his social media, a claim seemingly backed up with his recent posts and cries for help to fans.
Stan Lee's attorney, Adam Grant, said "Lee does not recall anyone reading the Illegitimate Document to him, and, due to his advanced macular degeneration, he could not have read it himself. While the Illegitimate Document purports to contain Lee's signature, Lee never knowingly signed it." What is even worse is that just over a month ago POW! Entertainment issued a statement addressing fan outcry about the health and treatment of Stan, who was shown as less than himself in videos from SVCC. In it they claimed to want to 'add our voice to the legion of fans and creatives who are speaking out' and that they 'simply want Stan to enjoy life, connect with his fans when he is able, and most importantly spend his time going forward without impediment or stress', all whilst allegedly profiting from being architects of his abuse.
Sadly this situation is not limited to just POW! Entertainment. Stan Lee has also brought legal charges against Jerardo Olivarez for Elder Abuse after it was alleged that he had stolen some of Lee's blood to sell comic books in Vegas. These reports are both shocking and deeply sickening. Stan Lee is one of my idols and is one of the reasons I want to one day become a working author. I can only dream of having so much impact on the world around us and for him to be allegedly treated in such a degrading and shameful way in his twilight years is an insult to him as a person and all his years of hard work bringing unbridled joy into so many lives.
