CD Projekt Red's cyberpunk outing has a lot of anticipation buzzing around it, whether that will be constructive to its success or a hindrance is yet to be seen, but it was all over E3 and came away as most news outlet's Game of the Show...mine especially. That is despite the fact it didn't have a main floor presence and that, other than a desperately sort after trailer, the gameplay demo was held behind closed doors and was shown only to a select number of individuals. An invite I'd have killed a fool to snag.
Many had speculated how big, if any, Cyberpunk's presence would be at Gamescom and today we had our answer. They posted the below announcement on Twitter from the official game account:
This could mean a number of things. At least we know the game is certainly going to be there in one form or another. It may be too soon to expect a release date or even a release window, although I seriously hope we're given either, but what I actually expect is now they've had time to digest feedback from E3, I believe we might actually get to see gameplay, despite it reportedly still being in a pre-alpha state. Whether that be of a certain area or level, no one will know for sure until the event kicks off and it does, or doesn't, happen, but I'm excited to find out.
Adam Ellis of Rooster Teeth and The Know did state on the Glitch Please podcast that from what he had seen of the behind the scenes demo, he didn't expect us to see the game anytime soon, possibly by 2020 or the next generation of consoles, which I sincerely hope isn't the case. The game has been dangled in front of us on a hook since the teaser trailer dropped in 2013, and I don't want hype culture to turn this game into something it isn't (pour some out for No Man's Sky). While it might not be on this generation, CD Projekt Red have confirmed that's what they're aiming for. Whether they miss that target is another matter entirely but it does bring a little solace to me that we (probably) won't have to wait until the Playstation 5 releases around 2022 to see this as playable.
