When Disney announced that they were going to be doing a young Han Solo film my jaw hit the flaw. Never in the history of a galaxy far far away did such a film not need to be made more; especially without the presence of Harrison Ford, the man who made the role so iconic. Recasting such a beloved character was unthinkable to me and was and still is dangerous business, especially with a fan base so defensive of its heritage and collective memory. There was quite a short list of potential actors, I personally and begrudgingly liked the look of Scott Eastwood, he was rugged enough and just needed to grow out his hair. Disney themselves opted instead for Alden Ehrenreich and I quietly died inside.
He didn't feel or look Han enough and I really started to worry what this film would become. Then the film ran into production trouble. Directing team Phil Lord and Christopher Miller were fired quoting the very general reason of 'creative differences'. Turns out the Executives didn't like the comedic direction of the film. Admittedly the humour of Han does have to be done correctly but they hired the guys behind the Lego Movie what the hell were they expecting to get in the way of yucks?
It was a film I was pretty certain I didn't want (give me a Boba Fett or Darth Maul instead), the movie was floundering trying to find its tone and the lead actor wasn't doing it for me in this specific role. All red flags. The reddest of flags. Nothing but red flags actually. Ron Howard was brought in for 'extensive re-shoots', which should be a very concerning quote indeed, and reportedly this snowballed to be more in-depth than originally anticipated as Disney were pleased with the work he had done. Okay, back on track right? The film wraps. Then radio silence. Nothing. Not even a still image. That was until the Super Bowl TV spot this passed weekend which can be seen here. This was quickly followed with a full trailer which can be seen here posted this morning. So, was it worth the wait?
In my opinion; yes. This film looks better than it has any right to. I should have probably learnt by now that Disney know what they're doing when it comes to the Star Wars franchise (I do think all their prior instalments have been fantastic, however I know you may disagree). Can we appreciate how perfect Donald Glover looks as Lando (if Disney doesn't jump on a solo Lando film they are missing a trick)! The visuals look great, the Falcon looks brand new and shiny but something struck me. Despite how incorrect I was regarding Alden's look being wrong, there is a problem in my opinion with his delivery of dialogue. The little amount spoken in the trailer by the new Han seems a little flat, there's something missing be it the Harrison gravel I'm used to or something else. It just didn't grab me. I may be wrong and I sincerely hope I am because if they can pull this off then screw it, Disney could do Sarlaac: A Star Wars Story for all I care and I'll throw money at it. This is only a sixty second spot and I'm clearly picking this apart far too soon, I will reserve actual judgement until I see the film. It's definitely done its job and piqued my interest. I was never going to not see this film but now I'm actually looking forward to it. Well done Disney, you've won this round.
