Disney have broken their contracts with James Gunn and he has been sacked off of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, a film he has personally written the script for and a series he has headed since the original film made it big at the box office. The reason? Old Tweets. He has been a victim of his older self as historic tweets have been brought to the forefront which has resulted in Disney having to take action due to the negative publicity. It's an interesting tale and one we are going to explore a little further.
Having read the supposed tweets from the Director they do appear crass and in poor taste, and you can see why a family friendly company like Disney would have a poor view of these. They are clearly in jest however, and taken completely out of context, being portrayed to be more inflammatory then they truly are (in my opinion). Some of these are close to the knuckle but some online have even gone as far to say these tweets show the Director in a light of paedophilia, which is an extreme claim to make from seemingly gallows humour. You can see examples of the social media posts below.
Although no one could argue several of these are in poor taste, the fact that these have been taken so literally is a very disturbing precedent. Whether malicious or not, the fact social media is so ingrained in all of our lives will mean this becomes more of a common occurrence, employers already check applicant's social media accounts as part of the interview process, now that seems to have extended to checking historical posts whilst in a job. In response, James Gunn had a follow up to the fall out across a number of tweets.
I have to find myself agreeing with him and whether that's a right or wrong opinion, would be up to your stance also. A lot of comedians are known for their offensive humour, Jimmy Carr comes to mind, and it's definitely worrying that something said years ago as a joke could cost someone like James Gunn such a big screen career on GOTG Vol 3 in the present. My worries extend to the film franchise as a whole also. Not only was Gunn the voice, the vision and the captain of the ship, so far one of his crew mates has come out in support, which could cause problems for Disney should they try to replace the Director. Drax himself said the following:
What do you think of this news? Do you think James Gunn should have lost his job over the tweets shown above? We're running a poll on our Twitter to see just what the feeling is online about this as he was an incredibly popular member of the nerd culture movement and a big personality.
