So it's been a minute since Playstation made a statement about how they are the superior system and that they had no plans of allowing cross-play as the gaming muggles would infect the superior race of high brow gamer. I'm fortunate because Playstation is my platform of choice and two out of the three people I'd regularly play with, including m'lady, is on the platform too. Most people aren't that lucky and Sony's blatant disregard for the times was fragmenting the player base and hurting diversity of play.
Kind of like Trump, Playstation up until recently have been fond of walls and throwing them up to protect themselves and their platform exclusivity. Despite Xbox and Nintendo playing nice and allowing cross-play of the Fortnite player base, Playstation was the frustrating hold out, spouting the corporate line about the system being the best gaming experience one could have without giving any clear indication that they'd ever consider such a venture themselves. In the console wars, despite being so far ahead this generation, people were starting to realise they were getting more for their money and more features elsewhere. It's a good position to be in, being the market leader. Microsoft enjoyed the position last console generation and were equally as stubborn about cross-play opportunities.
This morning however, what I thought I knew of the situation has changed. Sony made this official announcement:
Posted by John Kodera President and Global CEO, Sony Interactive Entertainment
Following a comprehensive evaluation process, SIE has identified a path toward supporting cross-platform features for select third party content. We recognize that PS4 players have been eagerly awaiting an update, and we appreciate the community’s continued patience as we have navigated through this issue to find a solution.
The first step will be an open beta beginning today for Fortnite that will allow for cross platform gameplay, progression and commerce across PlayStation 4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Mac operating systems. We see the beta as an opportunity to conduct thorough testing that ensures cross-platform play is best on PlayStation, while being mindful about the user experience from both a technical and social perspective.
For 24 years, we have strived to deliver the best gaming experience to our fans by providing a uniquely PlayStation perspective. Today, the communities around some games have evolved to the point where cross-platform experiences add significant value to players. In recognition of this, we have completed a thorough analysis of the business mechanics required to ensure that the PlayStation experience for our users remains intact today, and in the future, as we look to open up the platform.
This represents a major policy change for SIE, and we are now in the planning process across the organization to support this change. We will update the community once we have more details to share, including more specifics regarding the beta timeframe, and what this means for other titles going forward.
So, good news and a step in the right direction? In a way. I'm excited to be able to cross-play with Xbox users as my brother is a Microsoft loyalist, but that would mean getting him off of Rainbow Six Siege to knock about for a few games in Fortnite, which I can't quite honestly see happening. In the official statement, a very Sony thing to say was the repetition of the phrase 'play is best on PlayStation'. Which translates roughly to "Fine, you win. We'll do cross-play. We're still #1 though."
Are you looking forward to playing on Playstation with other platform users? What other games would you like to see Sony expand this feature to? Comment below or tweet us @ghoulishent.
