Today Sony announced that come December 3rd, they will be joining Nintendo in their push to resell old hardware, repackaged in a smaller more travel friendly form. With the popularity of the NES Classic, that was out of stock everywhere for a very long time indeed, and the SNES follow up, Playstation have seen fit to join the fray. During the dawn of its 25th birthday, Sony are releasing the original Playstation One. Just as was the case with Nintendo's offerings, the mini console will come pre-loaded with much loved games.
You can watch the announcement trailer right now on Sony's site and their marketing material is sure to pique your interest and states that you can Relive the moments that changed gaming forever, with the iconic PlayStation Classic – featuring 20 of the best games from the original PlayStation console, including Final Fantasy VII, TEKKEN 3, Ridge Racer Type 4, Jumping Flash!, Wild Arms and more to be announced. With only 5 out of the 20 games it will come with confirmed, I took some time to consider the other fifteen I would love to see. I came up with:
Touted as being 45% smaller than the original 1994 console, the system will not be saving your game data internally like the SNES Classic, instead, Sony are shipping the Playstation Classic with a retro style memory card which will kick me right in the nostalgia. I don't think I've used memory cards to save game data since the Nintendo Gamecube. The box will be complete with two controllers (without analogue sticks), the console itself (which will connect via HDMI) and the aforementioned memory card.
The announcement of this and the online clamber for a N64 Classic got me thinking, what else would I like to see? Below I've thought of two re-launches of consoles I have fond memories of, including a potential list of pre-loaded games.
Nintendo GameCube Classic
Xbox Original Classic
Although it would seem like a slam dunk, social media was not ablaze with people clambering for a Playstation Classic, not like they were for both the SNES and the NES. Despite the fact it has nearly been 25 years, what is retro is subjective. The SNES was the first console I ever played but I was late to it, born in 1993. The original Playstation was my thing, I spent a lot of my formative years on it, honing my skills in MGS, but even I'm not sure whether I'll pick it up or not. Original Playstations are still fairly cheap on eBay and so are the games, not overly inflated like the Nintendo cartridges are. It's beginning to look like Sony might have an issue of just who this console is for, especially when some of their newest consoles have PS1 titles for sale on the Playstation Store.
