Anyone that knows me knows I love Spider-Man, he's my spirit animal comic book character person. Hearing that a standalone game was being made for the hometown hero, that wasn't based on a film adaptation, was enough to make me salivate, and that was before I heard Insomniac Games were working on it! Not only that but the main bad guy in this is going to be Mr Negative which is a deep cut comic book villain that I really dig from the Spidey universe. But, it turns out that the game won't be the only new Peter Parker content set in this new video game universe.
The story of the game takes place later on in Spider-Man's evolution, where Peter Parker has been Spider-Man for going on eight years. That means he's a lot more skilled than his on screen counterparts as he's had time to perfect his craft. This age range is similar to the age he is in the current run of comics and I'm hopeful that some of that content, like Parker Industries or Horizon Labs, will be shown here. With this new story having us catch up with Pete later in life, Polygon reported that there will be two tie-in books, one of which being a prequel novel that leads straight into the start of the game. The story for the prequel novel is set to cover the Kingpin's rise to power and play to take over New York, the character himself will be a big part of the game.
The prequel book entitled Hostile Takeover will be written by David Liss and published by Titan Books. It is due for release on August 21st with the game releasing on September 1st, giving you nearly a fortnight to be up to snuff on the story. The other book is a collection of art for the game written and presented by Paul Davies entitled, Marvel’s Spider-Man: The Art of the Game. If you want to see some really nice visuals of the city, the innumerable outfits and the game world, it's a must have. The book will be an encyclopedia of lore for the game, its environments and its characters. It is due for release on September 11th.
