Star Wars has been one of my favourite franchises since I was a child and I think it's because it fuses Science Fiction and Fantasy so expertly whilst at its core being a simple tale of good vs evil. I even enjoyed the Prequels at the time just because they were more content to consume from a galaxy far far away. When Disney took the helm I wasn't concerned, I was excited. Without them we probably wouldn't have got more instalments as George Lucas was quite vocally done and after the heat he got for the remastered versions and for Episodes I-III who can blame him (that singing alien scene from Return of the Jedi though).
I have really enjoyed Disney's stewardship of the series and in my opinion their outings have been great, including the divisive The Last Jedi which I personally enjoyed. Going forward the director of that film, Rian Johnson, has been marked to take on a new Star Wars trilogy, completely removed from the Skywalker saga and all the trappings and baggage that comes with that. The official line was that this new line of films would be "separate from the episodic Skywalker saga" which makes me wonder will these films be episodic at all or standalone stories, much like what they are doing with the A Star Wars Story titles but set in a different time frame? My personal preference for time period is The Old Republic era where Sith and Jedi were plentiful and in open conflict against each other. Kathleen Kennedy has stated this is not the intended destination for Rian's work. I scowled and the world kept on turning.
That was until today. It has been announced that the showrunning partnership behind the award winning HBO Game of Thrones series, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, are to steward another new Star Wars series completely separate from Rian's own project. They are due to start after the finale of GOT in 2019 and this is mind blowingly insane for a number of reasons. With their catalogue of work it would stand to reason that their trilogy would be darker which would fit the Old Republic requirements. Bloody large scale conflicts, huge set pieces and thousands of soldiers with swords, be them of the lightsaber variety...sound familiar? I know I'm wishful thinking but I damn hope I'm right! A Mandalorian war movie would be fantastic also. “David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today...Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting,” Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. I can't find myself disagreeing with any of that.
These plans for new trilogies put in motion Star Wars' future, an afterlife disconnected to the original seeds of Lucas and a truly original homage to what fans know and love. Disney and Bob Iger have expressed the desire to make Star Wars for the foreseeable future, including a live action TV series in 2019 and I'm totally on board with this plan. I kind of hope they never stop. What do you think of this announcement and where would you like to see the new trilogies take us? Comment below or tweet us @ghoulishgent.
