VR is the pinnacle of what gaming and virtual experiences can offer when done right and companies around the world are pouring millions into the industry to try and get it right. Although VR at home has become fragmented with the likes of Playstation VR, HTC Vive and Oculus all competing for supremacy just to name a few, the future of this may be in destination based experiences. Enter The Void.
The Void is touted as a mixed reality 'theme park' where visitors get to explore virtual worlds whilst using cutting edge technology like haptic feedback, body tracking, the Rapture VR system and practical special effects to enhance the overall immersion. Partnering with Industrial Light and Magic, the visual effects studio founded by George Lucas for the original Star Wars films, they have created a limited time experience based around that most beloved of galaxies far far away!
You play a rebel, dressed as a Stormtrooper, who is sneaking onto an Imperial base on Mustafar to retrieve an item of great importance. Groups of individuals move through the virtual and physical space, playing out a storyline of around thirty minutes. Physical levers and buttons exist in both the virtual and physical space adding realism to the experience as well as fans and heaters to provide realistic atmospheric forces (Mustafar is very very hot).
Currently based domestically at the Shepherd's Bush Westfield Centre in London, this is the only UK location to house Secrets of the Empire and it is coming to a close on the 7th of March. I'm very excited to announce that both myself and my brother Liam will be attending The Void on the 5th and I'm doubly excited because 1) STAR WARS and 2) I've never experienced VR before. Might as well start at the top! Have you attended The Void before whether in the US or the UK? What has been your favourite VR experience to date? Comment below or tweet us @ghoulishent.
